2020 Henry McMahon Advocacy Award

Awarded to Kevin Hines
Presented by Kids Living Well

The Henry McMahon Children’s Advocacy Award is named after Henry McMahon, who volunteered tirelessly on behalf of the children, youth and families of Travis County. His passion was to strengthen children’s mental health systems of care and promote collaboration across child serving agencies. The award is in place to honor the advocacy work of those who voluntarily, without being paid, give of their time and energy to advocate on behalf of children with mental health needs.

Kevin Hines, nominated by Wonders & Worries, is our 2022 Henry McMahon Advocacy Award Winner. Kevin was first introduced to Wonders & Worries in May 2017. His daughter, Kirah, received support when her mom, Kourtney, was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a long battle, Kourtney passed away on August 11, 2018.

Kevin has worked tirelessly to support Wonders & Worries by serving on the Board of Directors, the Development Committee, and securing sponsorships and in-kind donations for fundraising events. Kevin is deeply committed to raising awareness and access to Wonders & Worries services to ensure no family in our community struggles with parental illness alone. He spends countless hours talking with individuals and businesses, so they understand the value of Wonders & Worries’ services. Everything Kevin does is for the love of his family, community, and his desire to make the world a better place.

Kevin cares deeply about children’s mental health, especially when their parent or caregiver is diagnosed with a life-changing illness or injury.

Kevin cares deeply about children’s mental health, especially when their parent or caregiver is diagnosed with a life-changing illness or injury. He shares his story with the community and also helped create parent videos, which are now educational resources for other families. His daughter, Kirah, also shares her story and has created youth videos. Additionally, Kevin identified a need with the Austin Police Department for the families of officers injured or killed on the job. He wanted to be sure the APD families had someone to call for initial bereavement support for their children and families through the Wonders & Worries Helpline.

Kevin Hines is truly a “Mental Health Hero.” Congratulations!
